Aster DM Healthcare Commits INR 2,300 Cr to Expand India Presence After QCIL Merger

Planned projects include two new hospitals in Bengaluru with 430 and 500 beds respectively, expansions at Aster CMI Hospital and Aster Whitefield, a 454-bed facility in Thiruvananthapuram and a 100-bed addition at Aster Medcity in Kochi.

Aster DM Healthcare has unveiled an INR 2,300 Cr expansion plan to scale up its operations in India, aiming to add 2,368 beds over the next few years through new hospital developments and selective acquisitions.

The move follows its merger with Quality Care India Limited (QCIL) and signals a deeper commitment to the domestic market.

Founded in 1987 by Dr Azad Moopen with the launch of Al Rafa Poly Clinic in Dubai, Aster DM Healthcare has grown into an integrated healthcare provider spanning hospitals, clinics, pharmacies and diagnostic centres across India and the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) region.

Two years ago, the company separated its India and GCC businesses, allowing sharper capital allocation and independent growth strategies for each geography. Since then, India has emerged as its primary growth driver amid rising demand for organised private healthcare and increasing consolidation in the hospital sector.

Founder-Chairman Dr Azad Moopen said that India has become the group’s largest growth engine and will attract focused investments over the next three years. He said the demerger has enabled quicker decision-making and clearer strategic direction, helping channel funds into high-growth and underserved regions.

The Expansion Roadmap

Under the current blueprint, Aster DM Healthcare will invest about INR 2,300 Cr to add 2,368 beds. Around INR 350 Cr had already been deployed in key projects as of September last year, indicating that expansion is underway.

The additions will extend beyond its traditional strongholds of Kerala and Karnataka, although southern India will continue to anchor near-term growth.

The merger with Blackstone-backed QCIL, which operates CARE Hospitals and KIMS Health, is central to this expansion. The combined platform, to be branded Aster Quality Care, will integrate Aster DM, CARE Hospitals, KIMS and Evercare into one network.

Together, they are projected to become one of India’s top three hospital chains by revenue and bed capacity, with total capacity expected to rise to about 14,710 beds from 10,265 over the next few years.

Planned projects include two new hospitals in Bengaluru with 430 and 500 beds respectively, expansions at Aster CMI Hospital and Aster Whitefield, a 454-bed facility in Thiruvananthapuram and a 100-bed addition at Aster Medcity in Kochi.

The merged entity is also preparing to enter markets such as Madhya Pradesh, Odisha, Chhattisgarh and Tamil Nadu, broadening its national footprint.

On funding, Dr Moopen indicated that capital requirements will be reviewed after the merger and separation process is complete. Strategic fundraising may be considered if aligned with expansion priorities and shareholder value.
