Haryana Pushes Real-time Medicine Tracking to Eliminate Shortages in Govt Hospitals
The government has made it clear that shortages will not be tolerated and has called for a robust monitoring mechanism to ensure timely replenishment of stocks.
Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini has directed all government hospitals to adopt real-time medicine tracking through a centralised digital portal, aiming to ensure uninterrupted drug availability and prevent unnecessary prescriptions from outside facilities.
The move comes amid broader efforts across Indian states to digitise healthcare delivery and reduce inefficiencies in public hospitals, particularly around drug stock-outs that often push patients toward out-of-pocket spending.
Chairing a high-level review of healthcare services, the CM stated that “if any doctor still prescribes outside medicines, they must explicitly state on the OPD slip that the medicine is unavailable in the hospital.” Accountability for enforcing this directive has been assigned to Chief Medical Officers (CMOs).
The government has made it clear that shortages will not be tolerated and has called for a robust monitoring mechanism to ensure timely replenishment of stocks.
Hospitals have also been instructed to streamline procurement by empanelling suppliers annually and communicating requirements at least four days in advance.
Alongside medicine availability, the review covered hospital operations such as OPD management, staffing levels, equipment status, and patient care quality. Officials have been asked to ensure that patients face no inconvenience and that services are continuously monitored.
The directive also ties into infrastructure upgrades, with the state pushing to expand access to advanced diagnostics like CT scans and MRI across all districts. While several districts have already been covered, the remaining regions are expected to be equipped to reduce the need for patients to travel.
The administration has also called for greater transparency and efficiency in procurement systems, insisting on adherence to timelines and quality standards.
