Kalyan Singh Super Specialty Cancer Institute Sets Up Digital PET CT Scanner in Lucknow
The new system leverages digital detectors offering sharper images, which is expected to enhance the ability of clinicians to detect small cancer lesions, evaluate disease spread, and monitor response to therapy with greater precision.
Kalyan Singh Super Specialty Cancer Institute, Lucknow, has announced the installation digital PET-CT scanner.
The new initiative marks the first of its kind in a government medical institution in Uttar Pradesh and was inaugurated by Director Prof. M.L.B. Bhatt, and aims to strengthen cancer diagnosis and treatment services at the facility.
The new system leverages digital detectors offering sharper images, which is expected to enhance the ability of clinicians to detect small cancer lesions, evaluate disease spread, and monitor response to therapy with greater precision.
The technology also seeks to reduce scan times and lower radiation exposure, which can improve patient comfort and safety.
Highlighting its significance, the officials said, “Unlike conventional PET-CT scanners available in many centres, Digital PET-CT uses digital detectors instead of analogue systems. This results in sharper images, better detection of small cancer lesions, and accurate assessment of disease spread and response to treatment. The scanning time is shorter, and radiation exposure can be reduced.”
As per reports, the new scanner was procured for INR 25 crore and seeks to enable doctors to accurately assess cancer patients' response to chemotherapy and radiotherapy and ensure tailored treatment for improved outcomes.
Once operational, the new scanner is expected to reduce the dependency of patients on private diagnostic centers for PET‑CT scans, which often involve long travel and high costs.
For patients under the Ayushman Bharat scheme, the PET‑CT charge will be set at around INR10,450 (excluding contrast), with other categories similarly structured to improve affordability.
