IGMC Shimla to Get Robotic Surgery Facility, Says Himachal CM

The first phase of the project will allocate approximately 40 beds for robotic-assisted surgeries, initially focusing on gynecological procedures to cater particularly to patients from Kamla Nehru Hospital (KNH), Shimla

Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu has announced the plan to establish a robotic surgery facility at the Indira Gandhi Medical College (IGMC), Shimla.

The initiative is aimed at modernizing surgical procedures, improving precision, and enhancing overall patient outcomes.

Reportedly, it is the third institution to get a robotic surgery facility in Himachal Pradesh, following Super Specialty Hospital at Chamiyana and Dr. Rajendra Prasad Government Medical College, Tanda.

The CM stated that the first phase of the project will allocate approximately 40 beds for robotic-assisted surgeries, initially focusing on gynecological procedures to cater particularly to patients from Kamla Nehru Hospital (KNH), Shimla.

He directed that robotic surgery for gynecological patients be started at IGMC.

He further explained that the gynecologists from KNH would perform elective surgeries at the facility, with a dedicated team deployed by the KNH administration for these procedures.

“This arrangement will ensure that female patients have access to advanced surgical facilities at both hospitals,” he noted.

Additionally, a three-month pilot trial will be conducted to ensure seamless integration of the new technology into hospital operations, with any necessary improvements shall be made based on its outcomes.

“Our objective is to make IGMC a model institution in the field of medical innovation and patient care,” he said, adding that this initiative is expected to enhance the skill set of doctors and surgeons working in the state’s leading healthcare institutions.

Reportedly, alongside the robotic surgery facility, IGMC Shimla will also establish a ₹25 crore diagnostic laboratory, aimed at improving diagnostic capabilities and supporting advanced surgical interventions.

“This will particularly help gynecologists at KNH, who will be able to access accurate and timely reports to treat female patients more effectively,” CM Sukhu stated.
