Union Minister Amit Shah Unveils Health Projects Worth INR 2,092 Cr in Assam
The Union Minister inaugurated the Pragjyotishpur Medical College and Hospital in Guwahati, built at an estimated cost of INR 675 Crore
Union Home Minister Amit Shah has laid the foundation stone of multiple healthcare projects in Assam with a total investment of INR 2,092 crore to expand medical infrastructure in the state.
Among the key projects, the Union Minister inaugurated the Pragjyotishpur Medical College and Hospital in Guwahati, built at an estimated cost of INR 675 Crore. The new facility is aimed at strengthening tertiary healthcare services across the state.
The newly inaugurated medical college has already received recognition from the National Medical Council and will operate with 505 beds, including 46 ICU units.
In addition, two cancer treatment centers in Golaghat and Tinsukia were also unveiled virtually by the Union Minister.
Each facility was developed at an INR 135 crore cost under the Assam Cancer Care Foundation (ACCF) and seeks to expand access to oncology care.
Further, the Union Home Minister laid the foundation stones for three new Super Speciality Hospitals with a combined budgetary allocation of INR 814 crore. These include projects at Diphu Medical College and Hospital (INR 220 crore), Jorhat Medical College and Hospital (INR 310 crore), and Barpeta Medical College and Hospital (INR 284 crore).
Furthermore, Shah also virtually laid the foundation stone for the INR 218 crore Swasthya Bhawan in Guwahati and the INR 115 crore Abhayapuri District Hospital. These projects are intended to enhance healthcare administration and expand treatment capacity in the state.
Speaking on the broader roadmap for the State’s healthcare, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma highlighted the ongoing partnership with Tata Trusts to establish 17 cancer hospitals across the State.
With the inauguration of the Golaghat and Tinsukia facilities, the Government is nearing the completion of this roadmap, the Chief Minister added.
As per reports, the state government is also planning to install an advanced Proton Beam Therapy unit at Guwahati Medical College and Hospital with an estimated cost of up to INR 500 crore.
The Chief Minister further noted, “Assam now has 15 medical colleges, and work on 10 more continues with an investment of Rs 6,000 crore,” outlining a vision to have at least one medical college in every district by 2030.
