Tripura has announced the launch of the Agartala Civil Hospital next month, alongside multiple healthcare infrastructure projects, the recruitment of over 200 doctors, and digital initiatives such as tele-radiology to improve access to care across the state.
Health Secretary Kiran Gitte, Health Secretary, Government of Tripura, said the government led by Chief Minister Manik Saha has undertaken several initiatives to strengthen healthcare facilities, services and medical manpower across the state.
The state has also initiated multiple infrastructure projects beyond the capital. Chief Minister Manik Saha recently laid the foundation stone for the new Sepahijala District Hospital, which will be built on nearly 14 acres at an estimated cost of INR 46 Cr.
Meanwhile, infrastructure upgrades are underway at the sub-divisional hospitals in Jirania, Mohanpur and Jampuijala, as well as at Gomati District Hospital. Preparatory work has also started for constructing a district hospital in Dharmanagar in North Tripura.
According to Gitte, referrals of patients from Tripura to hospitals outside the state have declined by nearly 80%, indicating greater availability of treatment within the state.
He acknowledged the shortage of radiologists at Agartala Government Medical College (AGMC) and Govind Ballabh Pant (GBP) Hospital and said the government is working to introduce tele-radiology services to address the gap.
To improve healthcare capacity, the government has recruited 214 doctors, with 160 already joining duty. The recruitment process for another 40 doctors from the waiting list has also been initiated, while the Finance Department has approved additional recruitment to further strengthen the state's medical workforce.
The Agartala Civil Hospital will initially provide services in two shifts. The government is also evaluating a similar two-shift system for selected departments at GBP Hospital and Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital to improve patient access and reduce waiting times.
Commenting on public health initiatives, National Health Mission Director Saju Wahid said Tripura continues to make steady progress towards eliminating tuberculosis by strengthening disease detection, treatment and monitoring across the state.
He outlined ongoing efforts to improve the effectiveness of the state's TB control programme.
