Shalby Hospitals Achieves Milestone with Gujarat’s First Bariatric Tele-Robotic Surgery

The procedure leveraged the SSI Mantra 3, an India-developed robotic surgical platform designed to enable surgeons to control the robotic system remotely.

Ahmedabad-based Shalby Multispeciality Hospitals has performed Gujarat’s first tele-robotic bariatric surgery aimed at bringing advanced robotic surgery capabilities across the Shalby Hospital Network in India.

The surgery was conducted nearly 1,000 km apart, with the operating surgeon controlling the robotic system remotely from Gurugram while the patient underwent the procedure in Ahmedabad.

The procedure was led by Dr. Parag Patel, Consultant Laparoscopic, Robotic, Bariatric & Gastrointestinal Surgeon at Shalby Hospitals, who operated remotely from the SS Innovations Centre in Gurugram.

He worked closely with the bedside clinical team at Shalby Hospital, SG Highway, Ahmedabad, headed by Dr. Sourabh Damani, Consultant Robotic & Laparoscopic Gastrointestinal, Bariatric and Metabolic Surgeon.

The platform was used to perform the bariatric procedures, with the three patients remaining at the Ahmedabad hospital throughout the procedure

Robotic-assisted bariatric surgery provides surgeons with high-definition 3D vision, enhanced precision, and improved dexterity compared with minimally invasive surgery.

According to the hospital, these capabilities are intended to enable safer and greater surgical accuracy, especially in patients with severe obesity.

The approach is also expected to reduce tissue trauma, post-operative pain, and support faster recovery while enhancing overall clinical outcomes.
