Tripura Deploys QR-Based Digital Health System Through IHMIS to Streamline Digital Healthcare

Tripura has rolled out a QR-Based Digital Health System through the Integrated Health Management Information System (IHMIS), enabling faster patient registration, digital records access, and improved healthcare delivery across government facilities statewide.

The initiative has enabled quick outpatient registration, digital storage of medical records, and seamless service delivery across hospitals and primary health centres.

The move builds on India’s broader push toward digitized healthcare under the Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission (ABDM), which aims to create an integrated digital health ecosystem nationwide.

Under the system, patients can scan QR codes at healthcare facilities to generate outpatient tickets, reducing waiting times and administrative bottlenecks. Each citizen is also assigned an Ayushman Bharat Health Account (ABHA) ID, allowing doctors to access comprehensive medical histories across government institutions. This eliminates the need for repeated documentation and supports more informed clinical decisions.

The initiative has already been implemented across district hospitals, sub-divisional hospitals, rural hospitals, and several primary health centres, with plans to extend coverage to all health facilities in the state.

In addition to digitized records, the system introduces e-prescriptions and online registration, reducing paperwork and enhancing operational efficiency.

A key feature of IHMIS is its telemedicine capability, which connects patients in remote areas with specialists based in urban centres such as Agartala. Residents can consult doctors from major hospitals without needing to travel long distances, improving access to specialized care.

Earlier, on March 30, a MoU was signed with Broadcast Engineering Consultants India Limited (BECIL), operationalising the system and formalising the collaboration required to implement and scale the digital infrastructure effectively across the state.

The Health Secretary directed officials to provide all necessary support and emphasized the active involvement of state doctors and healthcare staff in the initiative.
