Optum & Microsoft Team Up to Simplify Claims Processing with AI
The partnership seeks to introduce new AI-powered capabilities within Optum Real, a real-time claims platform designed to streamline reimbursement workflows and enhance transparency in the healthcare payment cycle.
Global healthcare service provider Optum has partnered with global tech leader Microsoft, aimed at improving the experience of healthcare providers in managing claims and reimbursement processes.
The partnership seeks to introduce new AI-powered capabilities within Optum Real, a real-time claims platform designed to streamline reimbursement workflows and enhance transparency in the healthcare payment cycle.
The platform connects healthcare payers and providers in real time, enabling faster validation of coverage, improved claims processing, and better visibility into reimbursement details.
By integrating Optum’s health care and AI expertise with Microsoft’s cloud and AI technologies, including Microsoft Azure, Microsoft Dragon Copilot, and Microsoft Foundry, the platform seeks to streamline operational processes and enable providers work more efficiently while dedicating more time to patient care.
The system features several new capabilities, including Unified clinical and operational data that provides providers with an actionable, end-to end view across the care and reimbursement journey.
The platform also provides smarter coverage predictions designed to reduce manual workloads for coders and help clinicians reach recommendations faster.
In addition, the platform also incorporates AI-powered documentation and chart intelligence, enabling providers to spend less time on paperwork and focus more on patient interactions.
Further, the system also includes AI-assisted prior authorization support that can identify potential coverage and payment issues earlier in the process, helping healthcare teams address them more quickly and reduce unnecessary escalations.
Beyond operational improvements for healthcare providers, the initiative also focuses on improving transparency for patients.
The real-time access to coverage and billing information is expected to help patients better understand their healthcare costs and reduce uncertainty around claims and reimbursements.
Highlighting the importance of real-time clarity and reducing waste across the system, Larry Jones, CVP, health and life sciences, Microsoft, said, “Optum Real turns fragmented, disconnected claims data into actionable insights that help payers and providers get it right the first time . By creating a powerful, real-time engine for coverage validation, documentation, and prior authorization, it is more than modernizing claims; it’s about building a more transparent, efficient, and trusted health care experience for everyone.”
