Max Healthcare Announces INR 5000 Cr Plan for Pan-India Expansion

The expansion strategy will focus on both greenfield and brownfield projects, with an emphasis on Tier-2 and Tier-3 cities to enhance healthcare accessibility.

Max Healthcare, one of the largest listed hospital chains in India, which had recently surpassed the market capitalisation of ₹1 lakh crore, has announced to invest a whopping sum of INR 5000 to strengthen its pan-India presence.

The fund is planned to be deployed over the next 3-4 years to increase bed capacity from 5000 to 6500 in FY 2025 and 9000 in FY 2028.

The expansion will be primarily financed through internal accruals.

“All the profits that we are making, we are redeploying to create more healthcare assets,” said Abhay Soi, Chairman and Managing Director, Max Healthcare.

Highlighting the growing gap in healthcare needs, Soi said, “India’s healthcare needs are going to expand multi-fold in the next decade; the gap between the demand and supply is increasing.”

“Our population above 60 years is expected to exceed 300 million in 15 years.

I see it's crucial to keep putting up more beds, more hospitals, in tier 1, tier 2 cities, wherever else it is,” Soi added.

The company’s strategy is driven by India’s growing healthcare demands and changing demographics.

The expansion strategy will focus on both greenfield and brownfield projects, with an emphasis on Tier-2 and Tier-3 cities to enhance healthcare accessibility in underserved regions.

Reportedly, the company is also exploring potential acquisitions in tertiary care areas such as oncology, cardiology, neurology, transplants, and orthopaedics.

“We are open to all sorts of assets—focusing on tertiary care where we are seeing a huge amount of addressable market,” Soi noted.

Currently, Max Healthcare’s presence is concentrated in regions such as Delhi-NCR, Mumbai, Pune, Lucknow, and Nagpur. The company now plans to expand its presence into the eastern and southern regions of India, targeting cities like Kolkata, Bhubaneswar, and Guwahati.

“I am very certain that we’ll be in the East, whether it is Calcutta or Bhubaneswar or Guwahati, or in the South, and so on and so forth,” Soi said.

Recently, the company had also begun developing a new 500-bed hospital unit at Mumbai’s Nanavati Max Hospital as part of its broader expansion drive.
