The Himachal Pradesh government, led by Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu, has sanctioned INR 1,617 crore for the first phase of the comprehensive healthcare modernization initiative.
The investment forms part of the larger INR 3,000 crore Healthcare Project plan, scheduled for implementation from 1 April 2026 to 30 April 2031.
The move seeks to improve access to specialist care, diagnostic services, and strengthen the emergency response system in remote areas.
Under the initiative, the healthcare institutions will be upgraded with advanced diagnostic facilities, AI-enabled X-ray devices, and integrated digital health platforms.

The first part of the project aims to strengthen physical infrastructure within Government Medical Colleges, along with establishing High-fidelity simulation centers, AR/VR-based training facilities, digital libraries, and skill labs.
Additionally, it also includes installing advanced imaging and diagnostic systems such as MRI and CT scanners, and integration of digital health platforms such as telemedicine networks and laboratory information management systems.
In the second phase, tertiary care services will be expanded at selected institutions, including Indira Gandhi Medical College in Shimla and Dr. Radhakrishnan Government Medical College in Hamirpur, including advanced equipment such as O-arm 3D imaging, neuro-navigation systems, robotic surgery platforms, and integrated critical care monitoring systems, along with the establishment of an Advanced Pediatric Care and Innovation Center.
The third phase includes upgrading diagnostic and surgical equipment, including CT scanners, mobile X-ray units, ultrasound machines, laparoscopic systems, telemedicine services, and digital referral networks, which are also planned for Adarsh Swasthya Sansthans.
Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu stated that several initiatives have already been undertaken to modernize health institutions across the state.
Additionally, the government has introduced robotic surgery facilities at Atal Institute of Medical Super Specialities (AIMSS) and Dr. Rajendra Prasad Government Medical College. Similar facilities are expected to be extended to other medical colleges in a phased manner.
Further expansion plans, including a whopping sum of INR 3,000 crore, are underway.
