Himachal CM Flags Off Robotic Surgery in State Medical Colleges
Advanced surgical facilities launched in Shimla and Tanda, soon to expand to other medical colleges as hospitals across the state undergo major technology upgrades
Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu has unveiled robotic surgery facilities which are now available at the Atal Institute of Medical Super-Specialty, Chamiyana (Shimla), and Dr. Rajendra Prasad Government Medical College, Tanda, and will soon be extended to government medical colleges in Hamirpur, Chamba, Ner Chowk, and Nahan.
Alongside, hospitals across the state are being upgraded with modern treatment facilities, ensuring people no longer need to travel outside Himachal for specialized healthcare.
In a landmark move, the government has bifurcated the unified cadre of 3020 Medical Officers into Medical Officers (General) and Medical Officers (Specialists). Of these, 2337 posts are reserved for general MBBS doctors focusing on OPD/IPD and preventive care, while 683 specialist posts will cater to advanced clinical services.
To bridge workforce gaps, the Cabinet has cleared the recruitment of 200 Medical Officers as Job Trainees, 38 Assistant Professors in super-specialty departments, and 400 Staff Nurses as Job Trainees across different health institutions.
These measures are expected to significantly strengthen healthcare delivery and align with future medical challenges. A government spokesperson reiterated the state’s commitment to strengthening health infrastructure and making affordable, advanced treatment available within Himachal Pradesh itself.
Two months ago, the government announced that specialist robotic surgeons would soon be recruited to launch advanced surgical services in the state. A proposal detailing recruitment rules for these surgeons will be presented before the state Cabinet for approval. Once appointed, the specialists will not only perform robotic surgeries but also train other doctors in robotic techniques.
