Chennai Rolls Out Digital Platform for Streamlining Medical Reporting
The government medical colleges and hospitals across Chennai have been directed to adopt the newly introduced Medico-Legal Examination and Postmortem Reporting (MedLEaPR) platform, developed by the National Informatics Center (NIC).
Reportedly, this new system replaces handwritten autopsy, injury, sexual assault, and related medico-legal reports with standardized, digitally signed documents, which are expected to enhance transparency, efficiency, and accountability in medico-legal procedures.
In a directive issued to all the deans of government hospitals, Director of Medical Education Dr R. Suganthy Rajakumari administrative controller for all govt colleges, said the MedLEaPR module shall be implemented as a standalone on a pilot basis, with an option to integrate it with the Crime and Criminal Tracking System (CCTNS).
These reports will include medico-legal documents related to injury, age estimation, sexual assault cases, and post-mortem examinations, including those for foetuses, as per the provisions of the Pre-Conception and Pre-Natal Diagnostic Techniques (Prohibition of Sex Selection) Act.
Further, Deans of medical colleges have been directed to ensure that the faculty of forensic medicine departments issue signed hard copies of the legal reports generated through the MedLEaPR portal.
Reportedly, authorized officials, including health, police, and judicial agencies, are supposed to gain real-time access to reports. The system also triggers alerts via SMS and email to law enforcement to facilitate better coordination.
