The Government of India has announced deployment of Artificial Intelligence (AI)across key sectors, with healthcare emerging as a major beneficiary of the government-backed IndiaAI Mission.
To support the initiative, the Government has allocated approximately INR 10,300 crore over five years, aiming to strengthen AI healthcare infrastructure, expand access to advanced computing resources, and support innovative solutions that improve healthcare delivery nationwide.
Under the mission’s framework, computing capacity has reportedly grown rapidly, with 38,000 high-performance graphics processing units (GPUs) now available to researchers, startups, and institutions to develop and deploy AI applications.
This infrastructure is intended to catalyse innovation, from disease detection tools to intelligent telemedicine platforms.
Additionally, the IndiaAI Mission has emphasized international collaboration and the development of ethical frameworks for AI deployment.
The country has participated in HealthAI, an international body focused on responsible AI use in healthcare, and is engaging in collaborations with organisations such as the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) and partnering in the United Kingdom and Singapore to promote best practices.
Further, tools powered by AI are expected to strengthen clinical workflows and support earlier disease detection, more efficient analysis of medical scans, and personalized treatment planning.
Moreover, AI-enabled telemedicine platforms are also being positioned to improve access in rural areas by connecting patients with specialists in major medical centers, potentially reducing travel requirements and overall treatment costs.
