AIIMS Jammu Unveils Global Center for AI for Diagnostics, Robotics & Telemedicine Services

The governing body has also approved steps towards digitising operations, including the establishment of multiple CoEs in robotics and techno-surgery, telemedicine, and predictive medical technology.

The All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Jammu, has submitted a proposal to the Union Health Ministry to establish a dedicated Institute of Traumatology and a Global Centre of Excellence for Artificial Intelligence (AI) in Healthcare in collaboration with premier institutions of Israel and the United Kingdom.

The proposal follows its earlier announcement to establish a Global Centre of Excellence (CoE) for Artificial Intelligence (AI) in Healthcare, which we reported two weeks earlier.

Commenting on the proposal, Executive Director and CEO of AIIMS-Jammu, Prof Shakti Kumar Gupta, said, “The proposed Institute of Traumatology would be the first of its kind in the country. The proposal for setting up a Centre of Excellence in Trauma Sciences and an Institute of Traumatology has been submitted to the ministry. Such an institute does not exist anywhere in India.”

Presently, AIIMS Jammu operates a Trauma and Emergency Department, which has managed a significant volume of cases and provides super-speciality services across multiple disciplines such as Endocrinology, Paediatric Surgery, Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgery (CTVS), Nephrology, Neurosurgery, Neurology, Urology, Burns and Plastic Surgery, Surgical Gastroenterology, Medical Gastroenterology, Neonatology, Pulmonary Medicine, Surgical Oncology, and Cardiology.

Highlighting the significance of the Trauma Institute, Dr Gupta said, “This initiative is a high priority due to the significant burden of trauma cases, particularly road accidents. The objective is to create a regional and national facility providing comprehensive, efficient, and multidisciplinary trauma care, from stabilisation to rehabilitation.”

In addition, the proposed Global Centre for AI in Healthcare aims to leverage artificial intelligence to enhance patient care through AI-enabled diagnostics, predictive medicine, clinical decision support, and other technology-assisted services, and provide faster, more accurate, and cost‑effective diagnosis and treatment.

The governing body of AIIMS Jammu has also approved steps towards digitising operations and enhancing workforce capacity, including the establishment of multiple Centres of Excellence in areas such as ophthalmology with skill development, dental sciences, comprehensive cancer care, robotics and techno-surgery, telemedicine and telecare, predictive medical technology, research and international collaborations, quality and patient safety, and simulation and skill development.

Currently, the hospital operates at 400 beds and plans to expand to 750 beds.

Further speaking of hospital expansion, Dr. Gupta said, “Approval has been granted for 750 beds, and the number will increase with the expansion of facilities. Recruitment is ongoing. While there are shortages in some departments, regular appointments are being made,” Gupta said

Highlighting innovation and advanced care, Dr Gupta stated that AIIMS Jammu housed the country’s only Centre for Advanced Genomics and Precision Medicine among all AIIMS, enabling high-end genomic testing within the country.

“The expanding Oncology Unit now offers chemotherapy, radiation therapy, and immunotherapy, bringing comprehensive cancer care closer to patients. The advanced biochemistry laboratory, equipped with waterless dry chemistry technology, ensures high-volume, rapid, and accurate diagnostic reporting. Patient-centric initiatives such as the AIIMS Indoor Navigation App, Patient Care Manager, and Rogi Sahayak Mitra system, Parikrama Seva e-carts, Swasthya App, and dedicated AYUSH screening further enhance patient convenience and accessibility,” Dr Gupta stated.
