Ayushman Bharat Delivers INR 291 Cr in Medical Benefits in West Bengal Since August Rollout
West Bengal has nearly 2,500 hospitals associated with the scheme, forming part of a reported nationwide network of around 40,000 hospitals.
Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB-PMJAY) has provided medical services worth INR 291 crore in West Bengal since its launch in the state on August 16, 2026, with more than 1.8 lakh patients having accessed treatment under the scheme.
Launched nationally in 2018, AB-PMJAY is a government-funded health assurance programme designed to reduce out-of-pocket expenditure on hospitalisation for eligible families. Its rollout in West Bengal followed years of resistance from the previous state administration, which had relied on its own Swasthya Sathi health coverage programme.
According to the reported figures, approximately 4.13 crore residents have received Ayushman Bharat health cards in West Bengal, while another 1.8 crore people have applied for coverage.
The state’s separate health insurance initiative has also reportedly received applications from nearly 2.5 crore individuals.
Of the 1.8 lakh patients treated under AB-PMJAY in West Bengal, approximately 4,600 have received medical care at hospitals outside the state. This portability allows eligible beneficiaries to seek covered treatment at participating facilities elsewhere in India.
West Bengal has nearly 2,500 hospitals associated with the scheme, forming part of a reported nationwide network of around 40,000 hospitals.
The reported funding figures show that the Centre has allocated INR 426 crore for implementation, while the West Bengal government has contributed INR 284 crore.
The latest figures follow the scheme’s first-month milestone, announced by West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari in September. At that time, more than 50,000 people had received hospital care, with medical services worth over INR 28 crore delivered.
The state had also reported cross-border treatment, with 1,102 patients travelling outside West Bengal for care and 1,849 patients from other states receiving treatment at facilities within Bengal.
