KSSSCI Unveils INR 2.16 Cr Digital Pathology Facility in Lucknow to Streamline Pathology Workflow

The move to a digitised workflow is expected to reduce processing delays, minimise the room for error, and enable laboratories to handle a higher volume of samples.

Kalyan Singh Super Speciality Cancer Institute (KSSSCI) in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh, has launched a digital pathology facility to support the examination of tissue samples and reduce diagnostic delays.

The facility, developed by the UP government at a cost of INR 2.16 crore, was inaugurated by the Institute’s Director, Prof. M.L.B. Bhatt.

Speaking on the occasion, the Institute’s Director, Prof. M.L.B. Bhatt, highlighted the critical role of pathology in the accurate and timely diagnosis of cancer.

He noted that modern facilities like digital pathology would significantly contribute to improving the quality of diagnostics, operational efficiency, and collaboration among experts.

The new facility replaces the conventional process of examining physical glass slides with a digital workflow in which high-resolution images of tissue samples can be viewed and shared electronically.

According to institute officials, the move to a digitised workflow is expected to reduce processing delays, minimise the room for error, and enable laboratories to handle a higher volume of samples.

A key feature of the system is tele-pathology. The system digitises pathology slides to be shared with specialists within the institute and with experts at other medical centres.

This is expected to facilitate consultations and second opinions in complex cancer cases without requiring physical slides to be transported between locations.

Further, the facility is also expected to support patients from rural and remote areas. Tissue samples collected at peripheral healthcare centres can be digitised and transmitted to KSSSCI for evaluation, potentially reducing the need for patients to travel to Lucknow for consultations and reports.

The digitisation is also intended to support long-term preservation and enable specialists to access previously examined slides for follow-up assessments and research

Once operational, the facility is further expected to reduce the turnaround time for biopsy diagnosis from 10 days to five days through digitised pathology workflows and electronic sharing of slides for specialist evaluation.

Kalyan Singh Super Speciality Cancer Institute (KSSSCI) is a cancer care institute established by the Government of Uttar Pradesh to provide comprehensive cancer treatment, research, and education under one roof.

Spread across a 100-acre campus, KSSSCI has a planned capacity of 1,250 beds, with 750 beds in the first phase and a further 500 beds in the second phase. Its operational services include outpatient and inpatient care, operating theatres, emergency services, and day-care facilities.

In an earlier development, the institute launched a digital PET-CT scanner, marking the first of its kind in a government medical institution in Uttar Pradesh. The system is aimed at strengthening cancer diagnosis and treatment services at the facility.
