AI-Powered Stroke Project in Punjab Screens Over 700 Patients for Timely Treatment

The AI-powered Screening Tool has helped six patients suffering from severe strokes to undergo a complex, life-saving brain clot removal procedure known as Mechanical Thrombectomy, completely free of cost.

In a significant move, Punjab Health Minister Balbir Singh has announced the massive success of its government’s latest AI screening drive.

The program, according to Singh, has screened 700 stroke patients using Qure.ai's screening tool, which analyzes CT scans to detect signs of stroke within minutes.

The project, AI-Powered Stroke Project, which started in March 2024, aims to ensure equitable access to world-class stroke care for all.

The AI screening device assists doctors at district and sub-district hospitals by rapidly identifying patients who require immediate intervention.

Hailing this initiative, Balbir Singh, said, "This is a transformative model that delivers swift, expert care directly to citizens in their moment of greatest need. Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann-led Punjab Government is fully committed to expanding this proven initiative across Punjab to ensure equitable access to world-class stroke care for all.”

Highlighting the impact of this initiative, Singh added, "Through this project, we are not just saving lives but also preventing devastating disabilities. The Punjab Government is providing the Mechanical Thrombectomy procedure, which can cost between ₹5 to ₹6 lakh in private hospitals, entirely free of cost to patients. This ensures that financial constraints do not stand in the way of a patient's recovery and a second chance at life."

Reportedly, the Qure.ai’s AI-powered Screening Tool has helped six patients suffering from severe strokes to undergo a complex, life-saving brain clot removal procedure known as Mechanical Thrombectomy, completely free of cost.

Under this initiative, patients with suspected stroke arriving at the spoke centres in district hospitals in Hoshiarpur, Ludhiana, Sangrur, and Government Medical College Patiala can immediately undergo a CT scan.

This scan is then analyzed in minutes by sophisticated AI technology from Qure.ai, with the results instantly shared with a team of specialist neurologists at the central hub, Christian Medical College (CMC), Ludhiana, and those patients identified as candidates for mechanical thrombectomy are then transferred to CMC Ludhiana, where the treatment is provided free of cost.
