Sir Ganga Ram Hospital Completes 1,200 km Robotic Telesurgeries, Operating Remotely From Gujarat

Sir Ganga Ram Hospital has achieved a significant milestone by completing a series ofrobotic telesurgeries over a distance of more than 1,200 kilometres, demonstrating how advanced digital connectivity and robotic surgeries are reshaping access to specialised surgical care in India.

The hospital has successfully performed four complex procedures across urology and general surgery, with surgeons operating remotely from Vapi, Gujarat, while patients were treated at the New Delhi facility.

Conducted within a span of 24 hours, the telesurgeries were enabled by the Mizzo Endo 4000 robotic surgical system and supported by high-speed, secure digital networks that allowed seamless, real-time transmission of surgical commands and visuals.

Robotic surgeries have been steadily gaining ground in India over the past decade, offering improved precision, smaller incisions, reduced blood loss, and faster recovery times.

Telesurgeries take this a step further by allowing expert surgeons to operate across long distances, addressing disparities in access to advanced surgical expertise, especially for patients located far from major medical centres.

During the procedures, the hospital’s multidisciplinary team coordinated closely across locations to ensure patient safety and surgical accuracy.

Commenting on the achievement, Dr Ajay Swaroop, Chairman, Board of Management, Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, said, “This milestone reflects our commitment to combining clinical excellence with cutting-edge technology to make quality healthcare accessible beyond geographical boundaries.”

Dr Jayasree Sood, Vice Chairperson, Board of Management, added, “By integrating digital connectivity with clinical expertise, we are able to deliver specialised surgical care to patients who may otherwise struggle to access it.”

Dr. (Prof.) A.K. Bhalla, Honorary Secretary, Board of Management, noted that the convergence of robotics and digital connectivity represents a meaningful advance in surgical science, with the potential to link advanced treatment centres with patients in remote regions.

Explaining the telesurgical approach, Dr Vipin Tyagi said, “Telesurgery allows us to deliver the same precision and confidence across distances as in a conventional operating room. This collaboration shows how expertise and teamwork can transcend geography.”

The surgical team included Dr. Vipin Tyagi, Senior Consultant in Urology and Renal Transplant, who served as the Robotic Coordinator; Dr. Ajay Sharma, Senior Consultant in Urology and Director - Robotics; Dr. Tarun Mittal, Senior Consultant and Vice Chairperson of the Department of Laparoscopy, Laser and General Surgery; Dr. Anmol Ahuja and Dr. Ashish Dey from General Surgery; and Dr. Mukund Khaitan and Dr. Suviraj John from the Minimal Access and Bariatric Surgery Centre.
