Alongside insurance coverage and medicine affordability, the government has also advanced healthcare digitization through the Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has highlighted Ayushman Bharat and the Pradhan Mantri Bharatiya Jan Aushadhi Pariyojana as key pillars of India's healthcare transformation over the past 12 years, emphasizing efforts to make quality treatment, medicines and healthcare services more affordable and accessible for citizens.
The remarks come as the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government marks more than 12 years in office under Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
In a post on X, the Prime Minister highlighted several healthcare initiatives that have shaped the country's public health landscape, with particular focus on financial protection, affordable medicines and improved medical infrastructure.
"Over the last 12 years, India has worked to make quality healthcare more affordable and accessible. We feel proud when we are known as the nation with the world's largest healthcare programme, Ayushman Bharat, which provides top-quality healthcare to the most vulnerable," PM Modi said.
Launched in 2018, Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB PM-JAY) provides health insurance coverage of up to INR 5 lakh per family annually for secondary and tertiary care hospitalization.
The scheme is one of the world's largest publicly funded health assurance programmes and was expanded in 2024 to include all citizens aged 70 years and above, irrespective of income. The initiative aims to reduce out-of-pocket healthcare expenditure while improving access to treatment for vulnerable populations.
The Prime Minister said the government intends to continue strengthening healthcare access and affordability in the years ahead. "We will keep building on this ground covered so far in order to build a healthy India," he added.
Alongside insurance coverage and medicine affordability, the government has also advanced healthcare digitization through the Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission. ABDM seeks to create an interoperable digital health ecosystem by enabling digital health records, healthcare provider registries and unique health identifiers for citizens.
The initiative is intended to improve continuity of care, data exchange and patient access to health services across different healthcare settings.
