Boston Scientific Cyberattack Disrupts Global Operations, Order Processing

The company disclosed the cyberattack on Wednesday, saying recovery efforts are underway and that the incident is expected to continue affecting parts of its business.

Boston Scientific said a cybersecurity incident detected on August 25 has disrupted its global operations, including information systems used to process and ship customer orders. The medical device maker is investigating the incident with third-party cybersecurity specialists and has activated its incident-response procedures.

The company disclosed the cyberattack on Wednesday, saying recovery efforts are underway and that the incident is expected to continue affecting parts of its business. Boston Scientific has not yet determined the full scope or nature of the incident.

The company also said it has not determined whether the cybersecurity incident is reasonably likely to have a material impact on its business.

Boston Scientific's shares fell about 4% in morning trading following the disclosure.

The incident comes amid a series of cyberattacks targeting the healthcare sector and medical device industry. Companies recently affected by cyber incidents include Abbott Laboratories, Stryker, Medtronic, Clover Health, Novo Nordisk and West Pharmaceutical Services.

Boston Scientific said it is working with external cybersecurity experts to investigate and contain the threat. The company did not disclose details about the nature of the attack, the systems affected beyond those related to order processing and shipping, or whether any data was compromised.

The disruption could have financial implications if recovery takes an extended period. Evercore ISI analyst Vijay Kumar said Stryker's cybersecurity incident earlier this year took about three weeks to resolve. If Boston Scientific faces a similar recovery timeline, the disruption could result in an estimated 600–700 basis-point impact on third-quarter revenue, according to Kumar.

The company has not provided a timeline for restoring all affected operations. Its investigation remains ongoing.
