The 2026-27 state budget puts real money and a clear roadmap behind that ambition. Here is a detailed look at what the government has planned, where the money is going, and what it means for the state's larger goal of becoming a medical tourism hub.
The Numbers Game
The Assam government has allocated ₹4,635 crore for healthcare in the 2026-27 budget. Set against last year, this needs context. The 2025-26 budget gave ₹5,393 crore to the Health and Family Welfare Department alone, plus another ₹2,542 crore to Medical Education and Research, a combined outlay of nearly ₹7,900 crore. Even the total state budget has moved in the same direction, from around ₹2.60 to 2.63 lakh crore last year to ₹2,85,084 crore this year, an increase of nearly ₹22,000 crore overall. Healthcare, against that backdrop, has not kept pace.
