In a major push to strengthen advanced healthcare services, Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to inaugurate three major projects at the Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER), Chandigarh, with a combined investment of approximately INR 1,000 crore.
The combined projects include the Advanced Neuroscience Centre, the Mother and Child Care Centre, and a new Critical Care Block intended to enhance PGIMER’s capacity to deliver specialised and tertiary healthcare services while supporting medical education and research activities.
The inauguration is anticipated to take place digitally, with institute authorities reportedly preparing for a virtual event.
Among the new facilities, the Advanced Neuroscience Centre was developed at a cost of around INR 490 crore. The centre received its approval in 2017 and is expected to strengthen PGIMER's capabilities in neurology, neurosurgery, and related specialities.
Meanwhile, the Mother and Child Care Centre, built at a cost of INR 485 crore, has been completed and is expected to become fully operational later this month. Reportedly, the facility has a capacity of 430 beds and is intended to expand maternal, neonatal, and paediatric healthcare services.
In addition to the two centres, the newly constructed Critical Care Block will be unveiled virtually, strengthening the region’s healthcare infrastructure.
The latest development mirrors a similar digital launch in 2024 when the PM virtually inaugurated PGI’s 100-bed satellite centre in Ferozepur.
The upcoming inauguration follows a series of recent healthcare infrastructure launches by the PM.
Earlier this month, PM Modi unveiled major healthcare projects in Gujarat and the Union Territories of Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu, including a 220-bedded ESIC hospital in Surat and the Namo Hospital in Daman, aimed at expanding advanced healthcare facilities in the region.
Also, today, PM Modi overtakes India’s first PM Jawaharlal Nehru, becoming the longest-serving Prime Minister in India.
During his tenure, the government has launched several major healthcare initiatives, including the Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB PM-JAY), widely regarded as the world’s largest government-funded health assurance scheme, designed to provide eligible beneficiaries with up to INR 5 lakh in annual medical coverage.
