Bengal CM Suvendu Adhikari has announced the rollout of Ayushman Bharat coverage for 1.36 crore families, additional healthcare recruitment, and plans for expanded public health infrastructure across the state, alongside the inauguration of a new 100-bed ward at Kolkata’s SSKM Hospital.

“We are going to implement the National Health Mission. We are bringing 1 crore 36 lakh families under Ayushman Bharat. We will recruit more doctors, nurses, technical and non-technical staff,” Adhikari said.

“Today we started this vaccination drive in 235 hospitals, health centres, block hospitals and rural hospitals. The Union Health Ministry gave us 7,72,750 vaccine doses. Within three weeks, we have completed the drive,” he added.

Furthermore, the newly opened ward at SSKM Hospital is expected to support patient care capacity at one of the state's largest government-run healthcare institutions.

“In SSKM Hospital, a 100-bedded ward has been opened. To address referral problems in hospitals, we have formed a dedicated team,” Adhikari said.

Among other measures announced, the state government has directed private hospitals that received government land at concessional rates to reserve a portion of their capacity for economically disadvantaged patients.

“Those private hospitals who took land from the government at Re 1, we have ordered that 15 per cent of beds will be reserved for poor people,” Adhikari stated.

He also said healthcare facilities in the state would operate under the name “Ayushman Mandir” and disclosed that efforts are underway to identify land for an AIIMS-like institution in North Bengal, signalling further expansion of healthcare infrastructure in the region.
