Over 1.86 Lakh Ayushman Arogya Mandirs Operational Across India : Centre

Teleconsultation services available at operational Ayushman Arogya Mandirs are helping people consult specialists closer to their homes.
The Centre has announced that more than 1.86 lakh Ayushman Arogya Mandirs (AAMs) are now operational across the country, expanding access to comprehensive primary healthcare services under the Ayushman Bharat programme.
The initiative aims to strengthen comprehensive healthcare delivery by upgrading Sub-Health Centres, Primary Health Centres, Urban Primary Health Centres, and AYUSH facilities into integrated primary care centres.
To improve healthcare delivery at the grassroots level, the government has operationalised several initiatives under NHM, including Ayushman Arogya Mandirs (AAMs), the Free Drugs Service Initiative, Free Diagnostic Service Initiative, National Ambulance Services, Mobile Medical Units, ASHA programme, 24×7 health services, Prime Minister’s National Dialysis Programme, Anaemia Mukt Bharat, TB Mukt Bharat Abhiyaan and the Universal Immunisation Programme.
According to the government, the operational Ayushman Arogya Mandirs provide an expanded package of healthcare services covering preventive, promotive, curative, rehabilitative, palliative and referral care.
The centres offer services across maternal and child health, communicable and non-communicable diseases, elderly care, palliative care, oral health, mental health, ophthalmic and ENT care, and emergency medical services.
The government noted that the centres are intended to improve access to early diagnosis, disease management, and timely referrals while bringing essential healthcare services closer to local communities.
Under the Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB PM-JAY), eligible beneficiaries receive health insurance coverage of INR 5 lakh per family annually for secondary and tertiary hospitalisation. The scheme currently covers around 55 crore beneficiaries from 12.37 crore economically vulnerable families.
The scheme has recently been expanded to include 6 crore senior citizens aged 70 years and above from 4.5 crore families, irrespective of their socio-economic status, through the Ayushman Vay Vandana Card.
The government further highlighted the role of Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission (ABDM) in building an interoperable digital health ecosystem aimed at facilitating electronic health records and improving access to healthcare services.
In addition, teleconsultation services available at operational Ayushman Arogya Mandirs are helping people consult specialists closer to their homes. The services are expected to address shortages of healthcare providers and improve continuity of care.
Alongside primary healthcare expansion, the government is also strengthening public health infrastructure through the PM-Ayushman Bharat Health Infrastructure Mission (PM-ABHIM), launched with an outlay of INR 64,180 crore to enhance the capacity of health systems and institutions across the country.
Further, to improve maternal and child health outcomes, several flagship programmes are being implemented under NHM. These include Janani Suraksha Yojana (JSY) and Janani Shishu Suraksha Karyakram (JSSK), which promote institutional deliveries and provide free maternal and newborn healthcare services.
