“AI does not operate in isolation, but thrives on strong digital infrastructure and high-quality data,” said Union Health Minister J. P. Nadda at the launch of India’s Strategy for Artificial Intelligence in Healthcare (SAHI) in February 2026. The statement captures a central challenge for India’s digital health journey: technology can transform healthcare only when supported by reliable data, effective governance and integration into everyday medical practice.

India has moved beyond basic digitisation through initiatives such as the Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission (ABDM), which enables the creation and exchange of digital health records. By July 2026, the government reported over 94 crore ABHA accounts and more than 100 crore linked health records.
