Bengal Govt to Propose AIIMS in Raiganj, Plans Cancer Hospital in Jalpaiguri

An AIIMS is already operational in Kalyani, Nadia district, in southern West Bengal, and the proposed AIIMS in Raiganj would expand the state’s network of tertiary healthcare institutions.

The Bengal government has announced plans to seek the Centre’s approval for an All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Raiganj and establish a full-fledged cancer hospital in Jalpaiguri, with Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari identifying the two projects as part of efforts to expand healthcare infrastructure in North Bengal.

Speaking at a public event in Raiganj, after an administrative review meeting, Adhikari said the proposed AIIMS would be located in the Diknagar area of the town.

“The Bengal government has decided to send a proposal to the Centre for setting up an AIIMS at Diknagar in Raiganj,” CM Adhikari said.

The proposal would require consideration by the central government before the institute could be established. The announcement outlines the state government’s intention to pursue the project; it does not indicate that the AIIMS has received approval or that construction has begun.

An AIIMS is already operational in Kalyani, Nadia district, providing a central-government-backed medical institution in southern West Bengal. The proposed AIIMS in Raiganj would expand the state’s network of tertiary healthcare institutions if approved and implemented.

Adhikari also announced plans to establish a full-fledged cancer hospital in Jalpaiguri. The proposed facility is intended to strengthen healthcare infrastructure in North Bengal, although details regarding its location, capacity, investment, implementation timeline, and clinical services have not yet been specified in the announcement.

The announcement comes against the backdrop of the BJP’s electoral promise to establish an AIIMS in North Bengal.

The proposed projects represent a plan to expand the region’s healthcare infrastructure, with further details expected to clarify how the facilities will be developed and when services could become available.
