The hospital’s development plans have also included a proposed 10-bedded dialysis unit to improve access to renal care for patients with chronic kidney disease.

Garacharma District Hospital in South Andaman has inaugurated a newly constructed Operation Theatre and received eight ventilators and three portable handheld X-ray machines to strengthen local healthcare delivery.

The facilities and equipment are expected to improve access to surgical, maternity, diagnostic, and critical care services across the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.

Lieutenant Governor Dr. Dinesh Sharma inaugurated the new Operation Theatre at Garacharma District Hospital, marking an addition to the hospital’s capacity to deliver surgical services locally.

Garacharma District Hospital was inaugurated on January 3, 2026, after the existing Primary Health Centre was upgraded to a 35-bed district hospital under Phase I.

The facility provides outpatient and inpatient services, 24-hour emergency care, maternity services, laboratory testing, X-ray facilities, and other specialised services, including dental and ENT care.

The newly inaugurated Operation Theatre is expected to improve access to surgical and maternity services for residents of South Andaman district, with the eight ventilators and three portable handheld X-ray machines intended to support patients requiring respiratory assistance, strengthen critical care provision, and improve access to diagnostic imaging.

Details regarding the specific centres receiving the equipment and their deployment timelines have not been announced.

Following the inauguration, Sharma inspected the ongoing expansion of the hospital’s Critical Care Unit Block and directed the authorities concerned to accelerate construction while maintaining quality standards.

The hospital’s development plans have also included a proposed 10-bedded dialysis unit to improve access to renal care for patients with chronic kidney disease.

The completion of the Phase II building is expected to further expand the facility’s ability to provide secondary healthcare services. The operational status and timelines for these proposed developments have not been specified in the latest announcement.
