Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has inaugurated and laid the foundation stones for a series of healthcare projects with a combined investment of INR 3,679 crore.

The highlight of the event was the unveiling of a new building at the Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH), estimated to cost INR 3,300 crore.

The new expanded facility is planned to become one of the largest government medical colleges in eastern India.

The facility will feature over 2,600 beds, major and minor surgery operation theatres, a 250-bed ICU, and a 100-bed emergency ward with advanced radiology services.

Further, CM Sarma also inaugurated the 832-bed Mother and Child Hospital within the GMCH campus. Built at INR 376 crore, the facility includes general wards, a 152-bed neonatal intensive care unit (NICU), antenatal and postnatal wards, paediatric and maternal care departments, ICU facilities, and other essential services for women and children.

Speaking on the occasion, CM Sarma said, “The GMCH’s most important department is the Mother and Child Hospital, which sees the highest number of patients and attendants and is widely discussed. I am confident that it will be comparable to the premier medical institutions of India. This new facility at GMCH will play a key role by taking excellent care of mothers and children. We are moving towards a healthier and brighter future.”

In the same event, CM Sarma also dedicated advanced medical equipment for public use to further strengthen the state’s advanced medical care infrastructure.

Reportedly, an indigenously developed surgical robot was installed for INR 1.47 crore, while a low-field Made-in-India MRI machine was installed for INR 1.27 crore.

Additionally, 82 cardiotocography (CTG) machines were installed across medical colleges and district hospitals in Assam for INR 65 lakh, aimed at improving maternal health monitoring and supporting timely and preventive healthcare interventions across the state.
