Major Boost to Nagaland Healthcare System, Announces Drone Delivery for Medical Supplies

The initiative is intended to improve access to health services in emergency situations by enabling the timely delivery of medical supplies, support during disease outbreaks and natural disasters.

The Government of Nagaland has announced a Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) bringing together the Nagaland GIS & Remote Sensing Centre (NGISRSC), under the Planning & Transformation Department, and the State Department of Health & Family Welfare (H&FW) to integrate drone technology into the healthcare service framework.

The initiative is intended to improve access to health services in emergencies by enabling the timely delivery of medical supplies, support during disease outbreaks and natural disasters, aerial assistance for vector control, and geospatial mapping to support planning and decision-making.

The new collaboration aims to harness unmanned aerial vehicles to mitigate these logistical barriers, particularly for emergency medical supply deliveries and response efforts during outbreaks or natural disasters.

Under the agreement, the NGISRSC will oversee drone operations, build capacity, analyse data, and ensure compliance with relevant regulations, while the Health & Family Welfare Department will be responsible for coordination, logistical planning, and deployment.

The technology is also expected to support aerial mapping and vector control activities, further enhancing planning and decision‑making processes within the health sector.

Highlighting the significance of the collaboration, Principal Director of the Department of Health & Family Welfare, Dr. Mereninla Senlem, said the collaboration would strengthen Nagaland’s preparedness and response mechanisms during emergencies and disasters.

She further noted that the initiative would play a crucial role in ensuring the timely delivery of essential medical supplies during emergency health operations and disaster situations.
