The government has announced the launch of the Maharashtra Digital Health Technology Mission, enabling real-time health monitoring, data-driven decision-making and improved coordination across healthcare facilities through digital dashboards and information systems.

Maharashtra has unveiled a health-focused budget for the upcoming financial year, allocating INR 5,980.08 Cr for the health sector while introducing initiatives aimed at strengthening public health systems, building digital health capabilities, and improving early disease detection across the state.

Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said the government plans to develop the Mumbai Metropolitan Region as a global centre for comprehensive health and wellness services.

As part of this effort, the state will establish an Urban Health Directorate that will oversee implementation of national health programmes and coordinate healthcare delivery across 29 municipal corporations, 247 municipalities and 147 nagar panchayats.

New Public Health Institute in Nagpur

In a move aimed at strengthening public health training and research, the government has also proposed the creation of the Maharashtra Institute of Public Health in Nagpur. The institute will be developed on the lines of leading national institutions such as the All India Institute of Medical Sciences and the Indian Institutes of Management, and will be set up with the support of the Public Health Foundation of India.

The initiative is expected to support workforce development and research in areas such as epidemiology, health policy and public health management.

ADB-Backed Disease Detection Programme

A major component of the state’s health strategy is an INR 4,500 Cr programme, supported by the Asian Development Bank, that focuses on improving early detection and treatment of major non-communicable diseases, including cancer, diabetes and cardiovascular conditions in rural areas.

The programme is intended to strengthen diagnostic capacity and expand access to treatment services in underserved regions.

Maharashtra Digital Health Technology Mission

The government has also announced the launch of the Maharashtra Digital Health Technology Mission, which aims to create an integrated digital public health ecosystem.

The platform will enable real-time health monitoring, data-driven decision-making and improved coordination across healthcare facilities through digital dashboards and information systems.

Furthermore, Maharashtra currently operates 35 government medical colleges, and construction is underway for 11 additional institutions to increase the supply of trained doctors and healthcare professionals.

Under the Mahatma Phule Jan Arogya Yojana, the state’s flagship health insurance scheme, the number of treatments covered has been expanded from 1,356 to 2,399. The network of empanelled hospitals has also grown significantly from 1,792 to 4,537 facilities. The scheme will additionally support organ transplant procedures with financial assistance of up to ₹22 lakh through the State Health Assurance Society’s reserve fund.

Complementing these initiatives, the state has proposed establishing a naturopathy centre in Dare village in Satara district. The centre will focus on preventive healthcare, mental wellness and treatment of lifestyle-related diseases, reflecting a broader shift toward holistic health and wellness approaches.
