Google CEO Sundar Pichai Announces AIIMS Partnership, Signals Major AI Push in India
AI tools are being explored to assist clinicians by streamlining medical documentation, organizing patient information, and supporting diagnostic workflows.
Google CEO Sundar Pichai has positioned India at the center of the global AI transformation, announcing a partnership with AIIMS aimed at strengthening AI infrastructure and healthcare integration.
Pichai has met Prime Minister Narendra Modi during the visit to discuss expanding AI collaboration across sectors, including healthcare and regional language technologies.
“We are partnering with AIIMS; we are at the early stages of it,” Pichai said, underscoring that AI tools are being explored to assist clinicians by streamlining medical documentation, organizing patient information, and supporting diagnostic workflows.
AIIMS, one of India’s leading public medical institutions, handles millions of patients annually. Integrating AI into such a high-volume system could reduce administrative burden on doctors and improve turnaround time for medical reports.
Pichai reiterated, “AI is the biggest platform shift of our lifetimes and one of the most powerful tools to solve problems and improve lives at a planetary scale.”
Speaking at the India AI Impact Summit in New Delhi, Pichai has described AI as a generational shift that will reshape economies and public systems, including health delivery.
Pichai has emphasized that India’s scale, developer base, and startup ecosystem create a favorable environment for AI innovation. He has highlighted India’s track record in building global platforms and noted that the country is “well-positioned on the global stage” as AI adoption accelerates worldwide.
The discussions also extended to governance and education, with AI expected to support hospital management systems, personalized learning pathways, and public service delivery.
Alongside infrastructure, Google is expanding AI skilling initiatives, including professional certification programs designed to equip students and professionals with applied AI capabilities.
Beyond healthcare delivery, Google has announced a $15 billion investment in India over five years. A major component includes a new subsea optical fibre cable connecting Visakhapatnam to the United States under the “India-US Connect Initiative.”
The landing station in Andhra Pradesh is expected to enhance high-speed data transfer, strengthen cloud capacity, and support AI model training.
