Torrent Group Launches Torrent Diagnostics with India’s Largest National Reference Laboratory in Navi Mumbai

The Navi Mumbai laboratory has been equipped with advanced diagnostic technologies, including Next Generation Sequencing (NGS), MALDI-TOF systems and Biosafety Level 3 (BSL-3) containment facilities.

Torrent Group has formally stepped into the diagnostics market with the launch of Torrent Diagnostics and the operationalisation of what it describes as India’s largest National Reference Laboratory in Navi Mumbai, signalling a long-term, reference-led strategy in laboratory medicine.

The facility has been positioned as the scientific and operational core of the company’s diagnostics vertical, supporting 15 diagnostic disciplines and more than 3,500 test modalities across preventive, routine and specialised categories.

Torrent Group, the Gujarat-based conglomerate, known for its established presence in pharmaceuticals, energy and sports, has been steadily broadening its healthcare footprint. With diagnostics contributing to a significant share of clinical decision-making globally, diversified healthcare groups have increasingly moved to integrate high-complexity testing into their portfolios.

The Navi Mumbai laboratory has been equipped with advanced diagnostic technologies, including Next Generation Sequencing (NGS), MALDI-TOF systems and Biosafety Level 3 (BSL-3) containment facilities.

The company has also stated that the lab houses Western India’s first Transmission Electron Microscope within a standalone diagnostics laboratory. These capabilities enable Torrent Diagnostics to process complex workflows spanning genomics, molecular diagnostics, microbiology, digital pathology, transplant-related testing and infectious disease analysis.

By adopting a reference-led operating model, Torrent Diagnostics intends to use the National Reference Laboratory as a central hub that can support satellite laboratories, partner hospitals and collection centres over time.

“Diagnostics is a discipline where trust is built through process integrity, scientific depth and consistency over time… we have approached this business with a long-term perspective, starting with a strong scientific foundation,” said Varun Mehta, Director at Torrent Group.

“As Torrent enters the diagnostics space, we have approached this business with a long-term perspective, starting with a strong scientific foundation. Anchoring the organisation around a national reference laboratory allows us to offer one of the widest test menus in the industry and define strong governance structures, validation frameworks and quality standards,” he added.

Industry observers note that reference laboratories typically handle high-value and specialised investigations, while also standardising quality control, validation protocols and governance mechanisms across expanding networks.

Torrent Diagnostics has also indicated plans to build consumer-facing infrastructure, including patient service centres, trained phlebotomy teams and a digital interface for booking tests and accessing reports.
