Kerala Advances to set up INR 3500 Cr Genome City Hub

The project is designed to bring together pharmaceutical manufacturing, biotechnology R&D, medtech innovation, and genome-based research facilities within a single cluster.

The Kerala government is moving forward with plans to set up an INR 3500 crore Genome City, a large-scale life-sciences development initiative at the Bio360 Life Sciences Park in Thonnakkal, Thiruvananthapuram.

The 'Genome City' project, modelled on Hyderabad’s Genome Valley, is an integrated biotech and biomanufacturing hub.

The official announcement for the project is anticipated in early 2026.

The project is designed to bring together pharmaceutical manufacturing, biotechnology R&D, medtech innovation, and genome-based research facilities within a single cluster.

Further, the project will span approximately 60 acres and is projected to generate around 15,000 jobs once companies across pharmaceuticals, medical technology, and biotechnology begin establishing operations in the zone.

Moreover, the project site’s location near the international airport and the Vizhinjam port is expected to support logistics for the import and export of medical devices and lab equipment.

Alongside the Genome City, the government is also progressing works on MedSpark, a dedicated medical-devices development hub being jointly developed by the Kerala State Industrial Development Corporation (KSIDC) and Sree Chitra Tirunal Institute for Medical Sciences and Technology (SCTIMST).

The MedSpark campus, estimated at INR 256 crore, is expected to complete structural works by January 2026.

Currently, Bio360 Life Sciences Park hosts 22 companies with total investments of around INR 700 crore, and the figure is expected to cross INR 1,000 crore with ongoing expansions.
