India Strengthens Position as a Global Healthcare Hub, Says Nadda

The Bio-Pharma Shakti initiative is expected to strengthen drug manufacturing, research, testing, and regulatory systems, and position India as a global bio-pharmaceutical manufacturing hub

India has established itself as a global healthcare hub, Union Minister for Health and Family Welfare J.P. Nadda said recently, while highlighting the country’s expanding role in pharmaceutical manufacturing, vaccine supply, and healthcare delivery.

Speaking at a recent event, the Union Health Minister highlighted India’s position as one of the world’s largest suppliers of generic medicines and vaccines.

Commenting on India’s evolving position, Union Minister Nadda said, "India has established itself as a global healthcare hub, and it is supplying 30 per cent of the world's generic medicines and 60 per cent of global vaccine demand. Indian pharma products are exported to more than 200 countries across the world. This event is being held at a time when India is standing at a crucial and decisive phase of its development journey."

The Union Minister also underlined the growth of domestic healthcare infrastructure over the past decade. Initiatives such as Make in India, Aatmanirbhar Bharat, Digital India, and Viksit Bharat have given a new direction to manufacturing, innovation, and human development, he added.

Further, referring to India's G20 presidency and vaccine diplomacy, the minister said these have demonstrated the country's global responsibility and capabilities, with the most visible impact seen in the healthcare and pharmaceutical sectors.

Also, he highlighted progress under key healthcare initiatives such as Ayushman Bharat, stating that more than 10 crore treatments have been carried out so far under the Ayushman Bharat scheme, with the government bearing healthcare expenditure of over INR 1.30 lakh crore aimed at reducing out-of-pocket expenditure for vulnerable sections.

As a part of its effort, more than 1.80 lakh Ayushman Arogya Mandirs have been built nationwide.

Further emphasizing the role of digital health, Nadda noted that around 84.7 crore ABHA ID cards have been issued thus far under the Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission (ABDM), aimed at digitizing health records on a large scale and enhancing continuity and transparency in the provision of healthcare.

Referring to the Union Budget 2026–27 announcement for ‘Bio-Pharma Shakti’ initiative with an outlay of INR 10,000 crore over five years, Nadda said the initiative is expected to strengthen drug manufacturing, research, testing, and regulatory systems and position India as a global bio-pharmaceutical manufacturing hub.

He further added that the pharmaceutical and healthcare industries are anticipated to continue to be important pillars for economic growth, job creation, and global leadership as India advances toward the aim of Viksit Bharat 2047.
