Himachal Pradesh Moves to Scale Robotic Surgery Across Government Medical Colleges by 2026

The expansion of robotic surgery is being planned alongside significant public investment in digital health infrastructure and specialised care.

The Himachal Pradesh government has begun rolling out robotic surgery in its public health system and has outlined plans to extend robotic surgery facilities to every government medical college in the state by early 2026.

Announcing the initiative, Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu said, “These updates are part of a broader strategy to make Himachal Pradesh a medical excellence hub.”

Robotic surgery has been operationalised at AIMSS Chamiana and Tanda Medical College, marking the first time such advanced surgical technology has entered Himachal Pradesh’s public healthcare network.

The expansion of robotic surgery is being planned alongside significant public investment in digital health infrastructure and specialised care.

Robotic surgery is expected to support precision procedures, reduce recovery time, and improve surgical outcomes, particularly in complex cases that traditionally required referral to private or out-of-state facilities.

In parallel, the state has approved targeted funding to strengthen specialised treatment capacity. An allocation of Rs 5 crore each has been announced for IGMC Shimla and medical colleges in Tanda, Hamirpur, Ner Chowk, and AIMSS Chamiana to establish dedicated bone marrow transplant infrastructure.

This investment is being supported by a separate approval of Rs 75 crore for AI-enabled smart laboratories at IGMC and Tanda, designed to automate diagnostics and shorten reporting timelines.

The government has also moved forward with plans for an Advanced Pediatric Centre at AIMSS Chamiana to address specialised child healthcare needs within the state.

The administration has linked robotic surgery and digital health investments to a larger goal of building a resilient, inclusive health system that prioritises vulnerable populations while adopting advanced medical technologies.

Officials have indicated that with sustained investment, robotic surgery could become a standard feature of government hospitals in Himachal Pradesh.

Alongside surgical technology upgrades, the government has launched dedicated senior citizen outpatient departments across major hospitals.
