Sir H N Reliance Foundation Hospital Launches India’s First Tele-Robotic Surgery Programme

Sir H N Reliance Foundation Hospital (HNRFH) has launched India’s first tele-robotic surgery programme, enabling specialist surgeons based in Mumbai to remotely perform and guide robotic-assisted surgeries at partner healthcare centres across the country.

The programme has been launched in collaboration with the Dhirubhai Ambani Occupational Health (DAOH) & Community Medical Centre, Jamnagar, and is powered by high-speed digital connectivity from Reliance Jio.

The first procedure under the programme was successfully conducted at the Community Medical Centre in Jamnagar, Gujarat, with surgical leadership provided by HNRFH’s Director of Urology Oncology. The procedure marks a significant development in India’s telemedicine and robotic surgery ecosystem, demonstrating the feasibility of delivering complex surgical care across long distances in real time.

According to the hospital, the programme is designed to address long-standing access gaps in advanced surgical care, particularly for patients in non-metro, semi-urban, and remote regions. By allowing surgeons at HNRFH to operate or provide real-time guidance from Mumbai, the initiative reduces the need for patients to travel to major cities for specialised procedures.

The tele-robotic platform combines robotic surgical systems with secure, ultra-low-latency digital infrastructure, enabling precise surgical movements, continuous visual feedback, and real-time coordination between remote surgeons and on-ground medical teams. A multidisciplinary clinical and technical team from HNRFH supported the inaugural procedure, while local teams in Jamnagar were integrated into the surgical workflow.

The programme also focuses on ongoing mentoring and skill development for healthcare professionals at partner centres, allowing local teams to gain hands-on exposure to advanced robotic procedures while remaining embedded within their communities.

Dr Tarang Gianchandani, Group CEO – Healthcare Initiatives and CEO, Sir H N Reliance Foundation Hospital, said the initiative aims to overcome geographic limitations in access to specialised surgery. “Through our Tele-Robotic Surgery Program, we are enabling surgeons in Mumbai to remotely perform procedures for patients across the country, supported by indigenous innovation, advanced robotics, and secure digital infrastructure,” he said.

Anish Shah, COO, Jio Platforms, said the programme demonstrates how high-speed digital networks can support critical healthcare services at remote locations. He noted that the connectivity enables the ultra-low latency required for remote robotic surgeries, making real-time intervention possible across geographies.

Sir H N Reliance Foundation Hospital is a 360-bed, multi-specialty quaternary care hospital located in Girgaon, South Mumbai, offering advanced clinical services across multiple specialties.
