The company, which provides electronic health records (EHR), revenue cycle management, and patient engagement solutions for small and independent medical practices, said the new AI roadmap is designed to automate key workflows across the ambulatory revenue cycle.
Athenahealth has announced the rollout of more than 80 new and expanded artificial intelligence-powered capabilities for revenue cycle management (RCM) on its athenaOne platform, aiming to reduce administrative burden and improve payment outcomes for healthcare providers.
The company, which provides electronic health records (EHR), revenue cycle management, and patient engagement solutions for small and independent medical practices, said the new AI roadmap is designed to automate key workflows across the ambulatory revenue cycle.
The latest enhancements include automated insurance selection, AI-powered copay accuracy tools, voice AI agents, express coding capabilities, expanded payer surveillance, anomaly detection, denial resolution automation, and other AI-native functions integrated into the platform.
According to athenahealth, early performance data from features already deployed within athenaOne show a 30% increase in coding-related denial prevention and a 16% reduction in insurance-related denials. The company also reported that its AI-powered voice agents are completing prior authorization calls in less than an hour.
Paul Brient, chief product and operations officer at athenahealth, said advances in generative AI are enabling the company to improve services throughout its software ecosystem by allowing systems to better understand and process information.
One of the early adopters of the new AI capabilities is Georgia-based Heart & Vascular Care, which serves approximately 55,000 patients across the state.
Larami Oliver, vice president of revenue cycle management at Heart & Vascular Care, said the organization has seen positive results from the tools, particularly because they integrate into existing workflows without requiring significant operational changes.
The practice has been using features such as automated insurance selection, copay accuracy tools, and ambient listening technology. While ambient listening is often associated with clinical documentation, Oliver said it has also supported revenue cycle operations by creating more comprehensive patient notes that improve coding accuracy and follow-up processes.
Oliver added that improved insurance verification and billing accuracy have helped reduce rework, streamline claims submissions, and improve the patient experience by minimizing unexpected balances and delays.
The rollout marks a broader effort by athenahealth to automate revenue cycle processes and address longstanding administrative challenges faced by physician practices through AI-enabled workflows.
