Apple has introduced sleep apnea detection and hearing test features in India as part of an update to its health-focused capabilities.
The addition brings tools aimed at identifying potential health concerns related to sleep and hearing through its devices.
The sleep apnea detection feature focuses on identifying irregular breathing patterns during sleep. Sleep apnea, a condition in which breathing repeatedly stops and starts, is often underdiagnosed despite being associated with health risks such as hypertension, type 2 diabetes, and heart disease.
Estimates suggest that more than a billion people globally may be affected. By monitoring sleep-related signals, the feature helps flag patterns that may indicate moderate to severe cases, encouraging users to consult medical professionals.
This functionality is enabled through sensors in the Apple Watch, particularly the accelerometer, which detects subtle wrist movements linked to breathing interruptions during sleep. The device tracks these “breathing disturbances” over time and evaluates the data in periodic intervals, such as over a month. If consistent patterns are observed, users receive notifications suggesting further medical evaluation.
In addition to sleep monitoring, Apple has introduced a hearing test feature that allows users to assess their hearing ability using compatible devices.
The tool evaluates responses to a range of sound frequencies and provides structured results that can help identify early signs of hearing loss. These results can also be shared with healthcare providers for further analysis.
Both features rely on built-in sensors and data processing systems within Apple’s ecosystem to generate user-friendly reports. While these tools can highlight potential concerns, they are intended to support awareness and are not a substitute for professional diagnosis or treatment.
