NYU Langone Health has announced plans to build a new academic medical center in Melville, Long Island, as part of its strategy to expand access to healthcare services across Nassau and Suffolk counties.
The proposed campus will be developed on a 45-acre site in the Huntington Quadrangle area of Melville and will include a hospital with more than 500 private inpatient rooms, 70 emergency department bays, advanced operating and procedure suites, diagnostic imaging capabilities, research facilities, and the tuition-free NYU Grossman Long Island School of Medicine.
The multi-year project remains subject to state and local regulatory approvals, including environmental review processes and public consultation. NYU Langone completed the acquisition of the Melville property on May 21 for $135.5 million.
According to the health system, construction of the facility is expected to generate up to 8,000 union construction jobs and approximately 2,500 indirect jobs across Long Island. Once operational, the campus is expected to support thousands of permanent positions.
Alec C. Kimmelman, MD, PhD, dean and CEO of NYU Langone, said the new facility is intended to expand access to advanced healthcare services for residents across Long Island. The organization plans to work with local officials as the project moves through the approval process.
The Melville campus will also serve as a hub for medical education and research. NYU Grossman Long Island School of Medicine, which focuses on primary care and offers an accelerated three-year MD program, will relocate to the new site. NYU Langone stated that 40% of the school's most recent graduating class is expected to remain on Long Island.
Alongside the new development, NYU Langone said it will continue investing in its existing facilities in Mineola. Planned expansions include emergency care and specialty services such as oncology, cardiology, and neurology. The health system also plans to add radiation oncology services at its Research and Academic Center in Mineola and undertake renovations at Perlmutter Cancer Center–Mineola.
NYU Langone currently operates more than 320 locations across the tristate region and employs over 13,000 people on Long Island. The organization has expanded its presence in Nassau County through ambulatory care facilities and recently announced additional outpatient developments in Garden City.
The proposed Melville campus will be located near the intersection of the Long Island Expressway and Route 110, with plans to preserve green space while supporting healthcare, education, and research activities on the site.
