Assam Cabinet Allocates INR 4,257 Cr for Healthcare Infrastructure Upgrades

Out of the total fund, ₹2,200 crore is specifically earmarked for the Guwahati Medical College & Hospital.

The Assam Cabinet has announced the sanction of ₹4,257 crore towards enhancing healthcare infrastructure across the state.

Out of the total fund, ₹2,200 crore is specifically earmarked to upgrade the Guwahati Medical College & Hospital (GMCH).

The funding will also be directed toward improving facilities under Srimanta Sankardev University of Health Sciences, various paramedical institutions, and other medical establishments in Assam.

The announcement was made by Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma, who said that, “of the total outlay, Rs 2,200 crore will be utilised to renovate the new GMCH campus.”

He further added, the Asian Development Bank (ADB) will fund 80% of the project through the Center, while the remaining 20% will be borne by the state government.

Moreover, the project funded by ADB will see the old GMCH campus demolished and rebuilt into a modern facility capable of accommodating 5,000 patients at a time.

Sarma also said that under the new measures, members of the Moran community from Arunachal Pradesh will now be able to apply for MBBS and BDS seats in Assam under the State quota.

“They will be treated as citizens of Assam for the purpose of admission and can avail medical seats in Assam’s medical colleges,” Sarma added.
