Assam Bets Big on Healthcare with INR 1.78 Lakh Cr Investments; Medanta & Cocoon Lead the Charge
The hospital is equipped with state-of-the-art facilities, including robotic surgery and advanced medical technologies, to serve patients across the Northeast.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has announced that projects valued at around ₹1.78 lakh crore, pledged during the Advantage Assam 2.0 investment summit earlier this year, will be launched by December.
A major portion of this wave focuses on healthcare, signalling a transformative phase in the state’s medical infrastructure and employment landscape.
At the foundation stone ceremony, Sarma said the developments mark “a significant day in Assam’s industrial journey,” adding that the state is witnessing rapid growth across high-impact sectors like healthcare and allied services.
"Today marks a significant day in the journey of Assam's industrial development, which will have a far-reaching impact on strengthening the state's healthcare and hospitality infrastructure," the Assam Chief Minister added.
Project Pipeline
Among the key healthcare projects announced are the Medanta Super Speciality Hospital by Global Health Limited and the Cocoon Mother and Childcare Hospital by RJ Corp Healthcare.
Together, these two ventures represent a combined investment of around ₹800 crore and are being developed under the MoUs signed during the Advantage Assam 2.0 summit in February.
The Medanta project, estimated at ₹500 crore, is being constructed on 3.5 acres at the Sarusajai Industrial Estate along NH-27 in Guwahati.
The 400-plus-bed super-speciality hospital will deliver advanced tertiary and quaternary care, including robotic and organ transplant programmes, cardiac and neuro sciences, oncology, trauma, diagnostics, and preventive health.
Commenting on it, CM Sarma said, “The establishment of the Medanta Super-Speciality Hospital in Guwahati will set a new benchmark for quality healthcare in the region. With cutting-edge services such as robotic procedures, the hospital will benefit not just Guwahati but the entire Northeast,” CM Sarma stated.
Dr Naresh Trehan, Chairman and Managing Director of Medanta, underscored the organisation’s mission to “democratise access to high-quality healthcare across India,” while Group CEO Pankaj Sahni highlighted Guwahati’s strategic importance in serving “over 50 million people in the Northeast” and bridging long-standing service gaps.
The Cocoon Mother and Childcare Hospital, on the other hand, being developed by RJ Corp Healthcare, is expected to complement the region’s maternal and paediatric infrastructure with modern facilities and specialty services.
Talking about the role of RJ Corp Healthcare’s Cocoon Hospital, known for its expertise in maternity and neonatal care, the CM noted “The construction of such a modern hospital in Guwahati will ensure that the people of Assam can access world-class healthcare services without having to travel outside the state.”
The state’s 2025-26 budget has already earmarked ₹8,902 crore for the health sector, an 11 percent increase over the previous year, reflecting Assam’s focus on expanding healthcare access and infrastructure.
