Andhra Tests AI Healthcare in Public Hospitals, Reaches Over 12,000 Patients

Andhra Pradesh has trialled AI healthcare solutions across public hospitals, where multiple startups have collectively delivered services to more than 12,000 patients in just over a month while improving diagnostic speed and clinical efficiency.

Under the AP MedTech Innovation Challenge, 18 start-ups were selected from 297 applicants and deployed across government hospitals. Their solutions covered diagnostic tools, portable point-of-care devices, smart monitoring wearables, and remote telemedicine platforms.

Over 37 days, these technologies were used to serve 12,677 patients, enabling early detection of tuberculosis, identification of eye conditions, cancer risk assessment, neonatal complications, and cardiac irregularities.

Health Minister Y Satya Kumar Yadav highlighted the scale of the effort, stating, “This is the first time in India that multiple start-ups have simultaneously piloted AI-driven healthcare in government hospitals.”

The use of AI scribes, in particular, reduced consultation time by nearly 70%, allowing doctors to focus more on patient interaction and clinical decision-making.

The programme has been conducted with evaluation support from institutions such as the Indian Institute of Science, Indian Council of Medical Research, and Asian Institute of Gastroenterology, ensuring scientific validation of outcomes.

The government has announced an INR 1 Cr award for the top-performing start-up, along with additional incentives worth INR 40 lakh for others.

The initiative has been driven under the leadership of Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu, with a focus on making healthcare more accessible, efficient, and patient-centric.

Officials have indicated that the success of the pilot will lead to a broader rollout of AI-based services across the state’s hospital network.

Findings from the pilot are set to be presented at an upcoming conference involving medical professionals, students, and national stakeholders such as the India AI Mission and the Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur. This is expected to accelerate awareness and adoption of AI-driven healthcare innovations nationwide.
