IIT Kanpur's GSMST Gets a Boost: Indigo Co-Founder Commits INR 300 Cr for Expansion
The plans also include a 500-bed super-speciality hospital on the IIT Kanpur campus, along with a proposed 200-bed cancer care research centre.
Gangwal School of Medical Sciences and Technology (GSMST) at IIT Kanpur has received an additional INR 300 Crore from IIT Kanpur alumnus and IndiGo co-founder Rakesh Gangwal to support the development and expansion of the medical school and its associated healthcare infrastructure.
This recent capital follows his earlier contribution of INR 100 crore in 2022, which supported the Institute’s plans to establish a medical school on campus.
The latest contribution takes Gangwal’s total contribution to the medical school to INR 400 crore.
The latest initiative is aimed at accelerating the development of the medical school and further advancing its vision of combining engineering, science, clinical innovation, medical technology, and medicine.
According to the Institute, the expansion plans also include a proposed 500-bed super-speciality hospital on the IIT Kanpur campus, along with a proposed 200-bed cancer care research centre.
The facilities are intended to support medical education, clinical research and healthcare delivery, while creating opportunities for doctors, researchers, engineers and technology experts to work together on emerging healthcare challenges.
Speaking on the occasion, Prof. Manindra Agrawal, Director, IIT Kanpur, said, “Recognising the potential of interdisciplinary research and innovation in engineering technology and medicine to transform healthcare delivery across India, particularly in Uttar Pradesh, IIT Kanpur ventured into establishing a medical school. In 2022, Gangwal contributed INR 100 crore, which greatly helped the Institute set the plans in motion. This additional contribution of INR 300 crore by Gangwal will help us bring this vision into reality sooner. This support reinforces Gangwal’s commitment and trust in the Institute. On behalf of IIT Kanpur, I extend our sincere gratitude.”
The Gangwal School of Medical Sciences and Technology of IIT Kanpur has expertise in medical education, healthcare research, clinical innovation, and MedTech development.
Its focus areas comprise advanced academic programmes, interdisciplinary research, futuristic medicine, and MedTech innovation.
Sharing his thoughts, Prof. Anil K Lalwani, Dean of Gangwal School of Medical Sciences and Technology, said, “This historic gift from Mr Gangwal, an extraordinary IIT Kanpur alumnus, is a reminder of the power of individuals to catalyse a revolution. Undoubtedly, the Gangwal School’s vision to unite medicine, technology, and innovation in the service of society will have an impact far beyond IIT Kanpur.”
