AMTZ Launches BRICS BioDesign Centre to Advance Affordable MedTech Innovation
By creating pathways for co-development, investment and market access, the programme seeks to move healthcare innovations from early concepts and prototypes towards deployment.
Andhra Pradesh MedTech Zone (AMTZ) has launched the BRICS BioDesign Centre in Visakhapatnam to drive need-based medical technology innovation across BRICS countries.
The initiative brings together institutions, innovators, and industry partners to help translate healthcare ideas into practical, affordable, and scalable solutions for patients.
“The BRICS BioDesign Programme is about building partnerships and creating pathways from science to the market and ultimately to patients. By bringing together innovators, institutions and industry across BRICS, it can enable co-development, investment and market access, while making BioDesign more accessible to emerging economies. Most importantly, it creates a sustained platform for cross-border healthcare innovation," Dr Jitendra Sharma, MD & Founder CEO, AMTZ, said.
The programme is supported by the Office of the Principal Scientific Adviser to the Government of India, the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI), and the Science & Technology Cluster.
The BRICS BioDesign Centre at AMTZ has been established at The Atrium as a collaborative platform combining clinical, engineering, design, prototyping, and translational capabilities. It aims to connect researchers, healthcare professionals, innovators, academia, and industry from BRICS nations to exchange knowledge, build capacity, and jointly develop medical technologies.
The launch in New Delhi on September 11 was marked by the exchange of a Memorandum of Agreement among participating institutions.

Partner organisations include the University of Cape Town in South Africa, Sechenov University in Russia, and the Brazilian Society of Biomedical Engineering (SBEB).
“What makes this program special is its ability to bring countries, institutions and talent together to solve real healthcare challenges. By combining scientific capabilities and BioDesign expertise, it can accelerate the journey from ideas to products and ultimately to patients. I am confident it can become a lasting platform for innovation across BRICS and the Global South,” Prof. Ajay Kumar Sood, Principal Scientific Adviser to the Government of India, said.
The BRICS BioDesign initiative focuses on supporting the development and adoption of accessible medical technologies, particularly for emerging economies.
