AIIMS Nagpur Unveils AI-based Research Study to Boost Early Disease Detection
The AI system is also expected to be integrated with telemedicine platforms in the future, enabling remote assessments and wider access to health screening.
The All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Nagpur has initiated research to detect early signs of diseases by analyzing human voice patterns with the help of AI.
The institute’s Executive Director, Dr. Prashant Joshi, said the AI-based technology has the potential to detect warning signs of certain serious illnesses even before clear symptoms appear.
The project, which is being carried out in collaboration with IIT Bombay, was highlighted during the institute’s first Research Day, where Dr. Prashant Joshi explained that participants read standardized text in sound-controlled environments.
AI algorithms then analyze subtle variations in tone, pitch, and rhythm to identify patterns that may indicate conditions such as depression, respiratory illnesses, and neurological disorders, often before symptoms are clearly evident.
Dr. Joshi further added that the initiative aligns with All India Institute of Medical Sciences Nagpur’s broader mission to integrate patient care, teaching, and research.
Describing the significance of the research, he said, “Research helps improve diagnosis and decision-making, which ultimately leads to better patient outcomes, while noting that use of AI to interpret voice biomarkers can support early diagnosis and clinical decision-making, potentially improving patient outcomes, especially in resource-limited settings where access to traditional diagnostic infrastructure is limited. .
The officials further highlighted that voice-based diagnostics could complement existing medical tests by offering a faster and potentially more accessible screening method, particularly in rural and resource-constrained settings.
The AI system is also expected to be integrated with telemedicine platforms in the future, enabling remote assessments and wider access to health screening.
In addition to the voice-based project, AIIMS Nagpur is expanding its work in biotechnology through partnerships with technology institutions such as the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay. These collaborations aim to translate clinical needs into scalable, affordable healthcare tools and diagnostic devices.
