AIIMS Nagpur to Establish Bone Marrow Transplant Centre with NTPC CSR Support

The facility is aimed at offering advanced treatment for blood disorders such as sickle cell disease and thalassemia, particularly benefiting patients from tribal and rural regions of Central India.

AIIMS Nagpur will soon house a Bone Marrow Transplant (BMT) centre, supported by NTPC through its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative. The facility is aimed at offering advanced treatment for blood disorders such as sickle cell disease and thalassemia, particularly benefiting patients from tribal and rural regions of Central India.

The idea for this critical healthcare unit was initiated by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, who proposed the establishment of a BMT centre at AIIMS Nagpur to address the healthcare needs of patients suffering from genetic blood disorders. The proposal received funding support from NTPC and was formalised through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed recently in Mumbai.

“This will be a milestone facility for Central India,” said Fadnavis. “It will especially benefit children and underprivileged patients suffering from genetic blood disorders, which are alarmingly prevalent in tribal belts. The support from NTPC will ensure that modern and accessible care reaches the remotest parts of Vidarbha.”

The centre will encompass infrastructure development, diagnostic capabilities, medication, specialist care, and complete treatment services. The facility will also carry NTPC branding in line with CSR guidelines.

The BMT unit is expected to significantly reduce the reliance on metropolitan cities like Mumbai and Delhi for bone marrow transplants. Patients and families from Nagpur and nearby districts will benefit from reduced financial and logistical burdens, with care available closer to home.

NTPC Mouda, which has previously contributed to social projects in health, education, and welfare, is partnering with AIIMS Nagpur to provide care to underserved communities. The new BMT centre is set to strengthen AIIMS Nagpur’s role as a regional tertiary care and research hub.
