AIIMS Bhubaneswar to Introduce Robotic Paediatric Surgery Facility

The hospital plans to install a dual-console robotic surgical system, which is expected to enable one surgeon to operate while another observes or assists, enabling a structured learning environment for trainees.

AIIMS Bhubaneswar has announced plans to introduce robotic surgery in its paediatric surgery department.

The initiative is intended to support both patient care and surgical training at the institute.

Commenting on the initiative, Executive Director Dr. Ashutosh Biswas, AIIMS Bhubeneshwar, said, “Our institute’s objective is to combine excellence in patient care with the development of future-ready surgical expertise.”

The hospital plans to install a dual-console robotic surgical system, which is expected to enable one surgeon to operate while another observes or assists, enabling a structured learning environment for trainees.

Further, the hospital also plans to provide training that will include hands-on experience with simulation platforms as well as supervised exposure in actual operating theatre settings.

Reportedly, trainees, including postgraduate students and senior and junior residents, will initially assist at the bedside before progressing to more advanced roles under guided supervision.

Earlier this year, AIIMS Bhubaneswar had also launched a robotic knee replacement facility, which is reportedly the first such service in the government sector in Eastern India.

Subsequently, the Department of Orthopaedics conducted its first robotic-assisted knee replacement on a 66-year-old woman.

Hospital officials stated that the procedure was performed using robotic assistance to support surgical precision and confirmed that the patient is in stable condition following the surgery.
