The first robotic knee surgery was conducted on a 66-year-old woman, enhancing the surgical capabilities of AIIMS Bhubaneswar.
AIIMS Bhubaneswar has launched a robotic knee replacement facility—the first in the government sector in Eastern India.
The Department of Orthopaedics performed its first successful robotic knee replacement surgery on a 66-year-old female patient, marking a notable addition to the institute’s clinical capabilities.
The procedure, carried out using robotic assistance, was completed with high precision. Officials confirmed that the patient is in stable condition post-surgery.
Speaking on the development, Dr Ashutosh Biswas, Executive Director of AIIMS Bhubaneswar, said, "Robo-assisted surgeries are a game-changer for many, and now they're available to all, thanks to our dedicated team and government initiatives like Ayushman Bharat." He also noted that the new unit expands access to advanced treatment across socioeconomic backgrounds.
In another key development, Union Health Minister Jagat Prakash Nadda inaugurated the Central Research Laboratory at AIIMS Bhubaneswar on April 12. The laboratory aims to support doctors, researchers, and scholars in conducting evidence-based research with regional healthcare impact.
The Health Minister also laid the foundation for the Multi Utility (Gastronomy) Block, designed to address other operational needs of faculty, students, and the public. The structure is intended to improve space management and service delivery at the institute.
Nadda also inaugurated the new AIIMS Bhubaneswar website, which features improved digital services to enhance the user experience. Alongside this, two healthcare access facilities—the EHS Clinic and AMRIT Pharmacy—were launched to offer essential health services and affordable medication to the public. These developments are part of AIIMS Bhubaneswar's ongoing efforts to expand healthcare access and research in the public sector.
