AI-Powered Framework OncoMark to Predict Cancer Cell Behaviour for Precision Treatment

Indian scientists have developed an artificial intelligence (AI) framework known as OncoMark, designed to analyse the internal molecular behaviour of cancer cells and predict how tumours are likely to grow and respond to treatment.

The framework was developed by researchers from the S N Bose National Centre for Basic Sciences, in collaboration with Ashoka University, and aims to support more precise and personalised cancer care by moving beyond traditional diagnostic methods.

The system is designed to extend beyond conventional diagnostic measures such as tumour size and spread, offering a deeper understanding of cancer biology.

The model was trained using genetic information from 3.1 million cancer cells across 14 types of cancer, enabling it to learn how internal biological processes interact together, which is intended to detect tumour development and resistance to treatment.

As per reports, OncoMark demonstrated high accuracy in predicting hallmark activity, maintaining performance above 96 % across multiple independent datasets, and also provided a visualisation of how hallmark patterns change as cancer progresses.

By producing detailed molecular profiles of tumours, OncoMark seeks to help clinicians identify aggressive cancers that appear similar under traditional staging but are biologically distinct, which is expected to support more tailored treatment strategies and guide the selection of therapies targeting specific processes active in a patient’s tumour.
